Why do some online shops charge me taxes but others do not? I’ve noticed it before. Today I saw it with the same exact item from circuitcity and newegg. CC had it cheaper, but before his taxes it was more pricey than newegg since NE doesn’t charge me tax. I ended up buying from NE. But why does this happen?

A vendor who has any kind of facility (eg store, warehouse) in your state much charge sales tax.

If the store does business in your state (the state that they ship the product to), they charge tax.

It should be pointed out that, if they don’t charge sales tax, you owe your state "use tax", which is the same amount as the sales tax would have been.

I think, because Ive noticed with my own online purchases, that when you live in the state that the vendor does business, they charge you that local tax rate.

If the seller has a nexus in your state (that’s legalese meaning they have a store there) they have to charge you sales tax. Otherwise they don’t.
